Unwrapped: The Ingenious Design Behind EverGreen Containers’ Sterilization Technique

Evergreen Contrainers

Looking for cost-effective ways to increase efficiency and improve your practice? Movora Global Product Manager – Instrumentation, Power and Accessories, Hunter Constable, explains why many veterinary practices are investing in VetSpectrum EverGreen Filtered Sterilization Containers. These durable, reusable containers don’t require blue wrap, keep items sterile for months, and stack neatly in the autoclave and on the shelf.

All told, EverGreen Filtered Sterilization Containers can make your sterilization protocol more efficient and secure – and help you operate more sustainably. Here’s how these unique EverGreen Containers work.

The EverGreen Containers are rigid sterilization devices with a hard metal case and baskets. You can design your sterilization system around reusing washable filters or replacing disposable filters after every sterilization cycle.

Specially Designed and Validated Filters

The EverGreen Containers use specially designed and validated filters in the lid and base (either paper or reusable Teflon) that allow steam to permeate through the filter into the load in the container. The filters allow for steam exchange under pressure, preventing pressure buildup within the container and maintaining a barrier against outside microorganisms.

Precision Engineered Lids

EverGreen Containers’ uniquely engineered lids have interior and exterior features that ensure airtight seals.

Maximize autoclave efficacy with unique, airtight lid seals.

Rubber Gasket

The EverGreen container lid has a sturdy rubber gasket liner around the inside perimeter. This rubber gasket creates an airtight seal around the container lid and base connection so that the only air exchange is through the filters.

Locking Clip

The lids also have an outside locking clip mechanism. This, combined with the interior rubber gasket, forms an airtight seal around the base portion of the EverGreen Container system.

What Happens Inside the Autoclave

Gasket Sealed

When the EverGreen Container lids are locked, the gasket and locking mechanism create a seal. The containers then use the power of the autoclave (either pre-vac steam or gravity) to allow steam to permeate through the filters into the container’s contents and interior. This is similar to how blue sterilization wrap works, except the steam is only permeating through the filters in the lid and base.

Sterility Locked in

When the cycle is complete, the lids stay locked in place (and the gasket keeps the seal) until the container is ready to be used in an OR.

What Happens Outside the Autoclave

Filter Retainer

The interior of the lids and bases (for perforated base models) use a filter retainer that locks in place and creates a seal around the perimeter of the filter. This allows steam to permeate through during the autoclave cycle but prevents contaminants from entering the container when it is sitting idle in inventory as long as the lid is not opened and there is no damage, such as holes or tears, to the filters.

EverGreen Container Accessories: Assured Security and Practice Improvement

We offer accessories for EverGreen Containers, such as tamper-proof plastic locks or “security seals”. The plastic locks slide over the lid-locking mechanisms on each side of the container. They remain locked and must be forcefully pulled apart when the container is ready for use. This ensures that containers remain sealed, and the contents are sterile. We also offer security seals with color-changing sterilization indicators and paper labels with sterilization indicators for the exterior of the containers.

Sterilization Validation

Sterility tests have shown that the containers remain sterile on the interior for up to 6 months on the shelf.1

Improve Practice Efficiency and Cost Savings with Secure Sterilization Solutions

VetSpectrum EverGreen Sterilization Containers give you peace of mind. They maintain sterility through several unique features, including filters in the lid and base that permit steam exchange during autoclaving, airtight seals created by rubber gaskets and locking mechanisms, and accessories like tamper-proof plastic locks and sterilization indicator stickers.

Verified sterility tests show that the containers remain sterile on the interior for up to 6 months on the shelf,1 providing a reliable and secure solution for both sterilizing and aseptically presenting surgical instruments, drape material and additional medical equipment.
